Dear Class,
My name is Sister Bowen, and I am delighted to be your ENG 106 Basic Writing instructor! We have so much to look forward to together. You have a fun (and challenging) learning experience ahead of you. Welcome aboard!
Although I’ve never met you, I feel proud of you and love you for your diligence and courage to continue your education. Keep going; the Lord will support you as you righteously seek new knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. Also, please remember I am here to teach, support, and encourage you.
The first step to our success is to make sure that we know the best ways to contact each other.
How can you reach me?
Please do not ever hesitate to email, call, or text me. My email is bowent@byui.edu and I respond to emails within 24 hours during the school week. If you email me on Saturday, I may not see the email until Monday morning. My phone number is (208) 241-2889. I take phone calls and texts just about any time of the day and if I do not answer immediately, I respond as soon as I can.
Once the semester starts, I will be in my virtual office every Wednesday from 8 pm-9 pm, MT. I am very open to setting up one-on-one appointments that work for your schedule. When you want to meet me outside of my regular office hours, just email me a few days and times that work for you and I will quickly respond with the day and time that works best for me.
How can I reach you?
Do you read your BYU-I emails and I-Learn announcements? I hope so! If you aren't accustomed to checking your BYU-I email account, now is the time to start checking it daily, or at least every other day. Because we don't meet in a classroom several times a week together, my touch-points with you are virtual. I will send out an email on Monday each week and remind you to check your email in an announcement in I-Learn. I typically email the class at least one other time during the week with reminders and guidelines.
Have your previous instructors used the “Notes from Instructor” areas of their online classrooms? This space is my most useful tool for reaching out to my students. I use the space to clarify assignments and keep you on track. Commit RIGHT NOW that you will take the time to read my “Notes from Instructor” at the beginning of each week in order to save yourself time (and to avoid unnecessary stress) throughout the week. You will be accountable for my emails and “Notes from Instructor” because this is part of my class time with you.
Finally, please email me your phone number, and mention whether or not you receive texts. In addition, please share any information about yourself that you feel I need to know in order to best meet your unique learning needs. For example, if English is your second language, tell me now. If you work a full time job on top of taking online classes, this is good information for me to know. I would also love to hear any good news (a mission call, pregnancy, upcoming wedding, etc.).
I look forward to hearing from you and working with you!
Sincerely,
Sister Bowen
